Never ending story....

So you may have read this in an earlier post or actually seen it on line or TV. But the never ending story of the 65 foot 'boat' is continuing. As you may recall, the intrepid builder and family have gotten there monster boat in the water and are still sitting about 300 feet from where they dragged it in. They have no money to finish the thing, no idea of where they can go (except the dream of Hawaii) and they still have not even tried to leave the marina and test the boat. The plan is to 'shake it down' on the trip down the coast to LA. As stated, James nor Michael is an accomplished sailor, and neither has built a boat before. He chose to build with construction-grade plywood and lumber, rather than marine ply and hardwoods. This means the 'boat' is made of material that is not meant for a wet environment, of course this is not good. If he coated the wood in epoxy and seal it, the wood would last longer, but if there is just one small crack, the water will start to seep in and the wood will expand causing more cracks.

"I had about $15,000 from an insurance settlement, Michael put in another 5 or 6 grand from his 401(k), and my mom kicked in her savings."

Everyone hopes they just stay in the bay and don't try to sail out into the ocean. Even the bay is a hard place to sail and that 'boat' is not built for rough water... They put everything they had into this thing, maybe they will get a couple of years from it before it breaks up. Lets hope they are not lost at sea....
