Where have I been...

Some more pictures of my recent trip, these are shots from La Jolla in San Diego. I was able to get a board and surf a little, the waves were small and only on the reefs there was any peak to catch, plus not much of a push so the surfing was marginal at best. But this is normal for San Diego in summer.

The clouds were from a tropical storm remnant that past by, actually had a few drops of rain but the temps was in the high 70's and the water was almost 70 as well. So it was warm and relaxing, kind of like Hawaii without the humidity.

This area has many flat submerged rocks that are covered with sea grass, lots of lobsters hangout in this area and it is a great dive spot, a little tricky to get in the water since the grass and rock make it a challenge to get to the deeper water, but it is usually calm and that makes it easier to get in and out. There are small caves and arches under water and the rock form narrow 'valleys' that you can swim through or ride the surge. Once in deeper water (30 to 40 feet) the long kelp start and you can 'fly' through the long strands. If you never have scuba dived through kelp, it can be a little disconcerting, but going slow and parting the stocks is easy and if needed the kelp can be broken with your hands.

La Jolla is a great area to go and relax, the beach winds along a rocky but sand covered beach, which is in sections. The water is has a lot of fish and seals and dolphin can be seen from shore, plus lots of pelicans flying by. Many small coves make for good picnic areas and having amenities close by is great. Most people go to the other beaches which are longer but more crowded, the locals will go to these beaches to get away from the masses of people. Parking can be hard on the weekends but a short walk is not going to kill you.

The picture below shows what is like under water, flat rocks with gaps between, no sand though. The rock is covered on top with sea grass and the sides have sponges and kelp growing, plus you can find scallops and other sea creatures clinging to the rock.
