Barbara Bush makes a pitch for her 'wonderful son' while taking a shot at Trump
By Nick Gass
Barbara Bush praised her son's record in a new video released by Jeb Bush's campaign on Friday, titled simply "A Message From Barbara Bush."
“Jeb has been a very good father, a wonderful son, a hard worker. His heart is big," the former first lady said in the 30-second spot running on digital platforms, in coordination with a handwritten letter asking people to support her son's run. The digital spot features images of Bush with members of his family and shaking hands and talking to people on the campaign trail.
She also took an implicit dig at Donald Trump in asking for people to vote for her son.
"When push comes to shove, people are going to realize Jeb has real solutions, rather than talking about how popular they are, how great they are," she remarked. "He’s doing it because he sees a huge need, and it’s not being filled by anybody."
Echoing the campaign's "Jeb Can Fix It" line, Barbara Bush added, "Of all the people running, he seems to be the one who could solve the problems. I think he’ll be a great president."
Bush's mother was not always so supportive of her second-born son's White House ambitions, infamously telling NBC's "Today" in 2013 that the country has "had enough Bushes." The Bush matriarch reversed course last February, as her son prepared to run.
In the handwritten mailer also going out from the campaign, Bush wrote of her son: "People ask me if I wanted Jeb to run. The answer was no as the sacrifice for his family was huge. I changed my mind as it became clear he is needed. I admit to being prejudiced as I am his mother."
