Christie rips Trump for mishandling anti-Muslim remark
By Nick Gass
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Friday that he would not have allowed someone at his town hall to suggest that Muslims are a problem and that President Barack Obama is a Muslim and not an American, as one man did at Donald Trump's town hall on Thursday night in New Hampshire.
Trump did not correct the man, who also raised the concern about Islamic "training camps" growing in the United States, responding only, "A lot of people are saying that and a lot of people are saying that bad things are happening out there. We’re going to be looking at that and a lot of different things."
"Listen, Donald Trump's got to decide, as we've seen, I've said this all along. He's got to decide how serious a candidate he wants to be and how he handles different problems like this are going to determine that in the eyes of the American people," Christie told NBC's Matt Lauer on "Today."
Christie said he would not "lecture" Trump about what he should do, but made it clear what he would have done in that situation.
"I'll just tell you what I would do, and I wouldn't have permitted that. If someone brought that up at a town hall meeting of mine, I would've said, 'No, listen. Before we answer, let's clear some things up for the rest of the audience. And I think you have an obligation as a leader to do that," the governor added.
