US Navy nuclear submarine departs Gibraltar after rare public visit
by Dean Murray
A United States Navy submarine has departed Gibraltar following a brief stopover at the strategically important British Overseas Territory.
The ballistic missile sub arrived on May 10 and was observed sailing on Tuesday morning after a short stop.
The US Navy said: “The port visit demonstrates U.S. capability, flexibility, and continuing commitment to its NATO allies. Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines are undetectable launch platforms for submarine-launched ballistic missiles, providing the U.S. with its most survivable leg of the nuclear triad.”
