Trump fights back against Mueller indictments on Twitter
By LOUIS NELSON
President Donald Trump complained Tuesday that “the fake news is working overtime” after a wave of indictments from special counsel Robert Mueller, knocking a former campaign adviser who cut a plea deal with authorities as a "young, low level volunteer" and a "liar."
“The Fake News is working overtime. As Paul Manafort’s lawyer said, there was 'no collusion' and events mentioned took place long before he came to the campaign,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “Few people knew the young, low level volunteer named George, who has already proven to be a liar. Check the DEMS!”
Mueller’s team went public Monday with its first set of indictments, announcing charges against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Rick Gates, another campaign aide, including money laundering and other crimes related to the pair’s relationship with pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine.
A guilty plea earlier this month from George Papadopoulos, a former foreign policy adviser for the campaign, also became public on Monday. In documents that were unsealed, Papadopoulos admitted to lying to the FBI regarding his interactions with Russia-linked contacts during his tenure with the Trump campaign. The court documents said Papadopoulos revealed he interacted with Russia-connected individuals who offered “dirt” on Democrat Hillary Clinton and that he discussed these contacts with other campaign officials.
Papadopoulos is cooperating with Mueller’s investigation, according to his plea agreement.
The White House has sought to downplay Papadopoulos’s role in the campaign, despite Trump having told the Washington Post editorial board in March 2016 that he was an "excellent guy."
Trump officials are also trying to downplay the charges against Manafort and Gates, all while working to divert attention away from Mueller’s Russia probe and toward controversies involving Clinton and other Democrats.
And the president himself made an attempt Tuesday morning to direct attention back to his policy goals and agenda as he works on a major tax reform package. “I hope people will start to focus on our Massive Tax Cuts for Business (jobs) and the Middle Class (in addition to Democrat corruption)!” Trump wrote on Twitter Tuesday morning.
