Rep. Cresent Hardy (R-Nev.) has been hospitalized after suffering a minor heart attack on Monday, but is expected to return to Congress next week, his office told multiple local newspapers.
Hardy, who’s facing a tough reelection race this fall, underwent a “routine medical procedure,” his spokesman Larry Farnsworth said Monday evening. The incident occurred in the Las Vegas area, and he remains hospitalized.
“Out of an abundance of caution, doctors are continuing to observe him while he makes a full and speedy recovery,” Farnsworth wrote in a statement. “We expect the Congressman to return to a full schedule later this week and is expected to be in Washington next week for votes when Congress returns from the August district work period.”
House Republicans added the 59-year-old lawmaker to their campaign committee’s “Patriot Program” for members facing the most daunting reelection challenges. He's facing Democrat Ruben Kihuen, a Mexican-American state senator, in a district with a large Hispanic population. Democrats are trying to tie Republicans including Hardy to Donald Trump's controversial comments about Hispanics and immigration.
