A physical wall

Trump team: There has always been, will always be a physical wall

By Nick Gass

Donald Trump has been "remarkably consistent" with his call to end illegal immigration, one of his top spokesmen said Tuesday, as the Republican nominee himself sought to underscore his commitment to building a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, a day before his scheduled speech on the issue.

"From day one I said that I was going to build a great wall on the SOUTHERN BORDER, and much more," Trump tweeted. "Stop illegal immigration. Watch Wednesday!"

Minutes earlier, senior communications adviser Jason Miller took to the set of "Fox & Friends," where he sought to tamp down the notion that Trump's wall would be anything other than a physical edifice. Appearing on the same program Monday, Trump supporter Rudy Giuliani said that it would also be a "virtual" wall, prompting further speculation that the Manhattan businessman might be waffling on what has arguably been his most prominent proposal.

"What you've seen with Mr. Trump is he's been remarkably consistent in his pledge to end illegal immigration," Miller told co-host Brian Kilmeade. "We're going to build the wall, we're going to secure our borders, we're going to enforce our immigration laws. We're going to end sanctuary cities. We're going to pass e-Verify and uphold the Constitution. That's going to make a big difference in this country."

Miller demurred when Kilmeade asked whether he felt as though the wall would go "from sea to shining sea."

"So, I wouldn't say that I'm the best person to be the actual adviser as far as how exactly you build the wall, but there will be a physical wall," Miller remarked, reiterating that "nothing has changed with Mr. Trump's stance" and repeating that Trump has been "remarkably consistent."

Trump "is going to stop illegal immigration," and he is "the one candidate to do it," Miller proclaimed.

As far as whether certain people would be a priority to deport, as Trump and his surrogates have suggested in recent days, Miller repeated the candidate's talking points.

"Well, we already deport a lot of people every year. But what we have to do is do a much better job than what President Obama has been doing. Mr. Trump has said that we're going to start with criminal illegals," Miller said. "We have to go with the really bad ones and get them out of here first. That's the No. 1 priority."

Teasing out Trump's speech Wednesday night in Phoenix, Miller said he would "give a little more broader vision of what we're going to do."

"And I don't want to get too far out ahead of that," Miller added. "That's something that he's going to do and quite frankly Hillary Clinton won't."

Kilmeade asked, "Is the speech done?"

"He'll be giving it tomorrow, so," Miller said, laughing, as the on-air interview drew to a close.
