US National security adviser Jake Sullivan will travel to Israel this week, National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett told CNN.
Sullivan’s conversations with Israeli officials will touch on “a range of important issues including efforts to reach a hostage release and ceasefire deal in Gaza, the latest developments in Syria, and for discussions about Lebanon and Iran,” Savett said.
US President Joe Biden on Sunday said he would deploy US officials to the region as the US and regional counterparts assess the next steps forward on Syria. Sullivan’s trip is the first travel to the region by a US official that has been announced since the toppling of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria.
