Trump wants Greenland but the Arctic island's prime minister reminds him it's not for sale

Story by Victor Hagan

No, he's not going to be president.

President-elect Donald Trump once again expressed interest in the United States having control over Greenland on Sunday, but the Arctic island's top politician quickly shut down any suggestions of a purchase.

"Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom," the island's Prime Minister Mute Egede said Monday in a written comment.

The controversial comments were made following Trump's nomination of Ken Howery, a former envoy to Sweden, as his ambassador to Copenhagen, and commented on the status of Greenland, a semi-autonomous part of Denmark and host to a large U.S. Air Force base.

"For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

This is not the first time the incoming president has expressed interest in acquiring the Arctic island. In 2019, Trump openly considered buying Greenland during his first term in office. However, both Denmark and Greenland quickly rejected the idea before any formal discussions took place

"We are open for business, but we’re not for sale,” wrote Greenland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a tweet soon after.

With its Pituffik air base, Greenland is strategically important for the U.S. military and its ballistic missile early-warning system, according to Reuters, since the shortest route from Europe to North America runs via the island.

Trump also threatened to reassert U.S. control over the Panama Canal on Sunday, accusing the country of charging excessive rates to use the Central American passage.

"The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, highly unfair," Trump said.

Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino swiftly denounced Trump's comments.

"Every square meter of the Panama Canal and the surrounding area belongs to Panama and will continue belonging (to Panama)," Mulino said in a video posted on social media.
