Nikki Haley says Trump has not asked her to campaign

She referred to herself as being “on standby” to become a campaign surrogate.

Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, who once challenged former President Donald Trump for the Republican nomination, said Sunday she has not been asked to campaign for the Trump campaign, despite being willing and available to do so.

“He knows I’m on standby,” Haley said of Trump in an interview with Margaret Brennan on CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday morning. “I talked to him back in June. He’s aware that I’m ready if he ever needs me to do that.”

The former South Carolina governor also added that she is not helping with Trump’s debate preparation or campaign with him, but that she would be “happy to be helpful” if he asked.

“That’s his choice. He can, you know, whatever he decides to do with his campaign, he can do that,” Haley said. “But when I called him back in June, I told him I was supportive. I think the teams have talked to each other a little bit, but there hasn’t been an ask as of yet.”

Haley, who came the closest in the Republican primary to defeating the former president, spoke at the Republican National Convention in support of Trump. She was initially not invited to the convention — despite telling her delegates to back him — but eventually spoke at the convention in the name of unity, urging Republicans to support Trump even if they disagree with him.

But despite her endorsement of Trump and his policies, Haley appears to have some reservations. She dodged a question from Brennan asking if Trump is a “good candidate.”

“If I thought Biden or Trump were great candidates, I wouldn’t have run for president,” Haley said. “I ran because I thought I could do a better job.”

Haley added that she is against Vice President Kamala Harris. For her, she said, “it’s not a question” who she would support — even if she doesn’t wholly agree with Trump’s approach or style.

“When I look at the policies and how they affect my family, and how I think they’re going to affect the country, that’s where I go back and I look at the differences,” Haley said. “I mean, these are the candidates we have been given.”
