Trump: 'I gave up nothing' during Putin meeting

By LOUIS NELSON

President Donald Trump wrote online Monday that he “gave up nothing” during negotiations last week with Russian President Vladimir Putin, insisting that the media has continued to paint an unfairly negative picture of the bilateral summit in Finland.

“When you hear the Fake News talking negatively about my meeting with President Putin, and all that I gave up, remember, I gave up NOTHING, we merely talked about future benefits for both countries,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “Also, we got along very well, which is a good thing, except for the Corrupt Media!”

Trump has faced withering criticism over the past week for his summit with Putin, which included a one-on-one meeting between the two leaders and their respective translators as well as an expanded meeting with advisers and a joint press conference.

While Trump said Monday that he made no concessions during his meeting with Putin, the Kremlin has claimed several agreements were struck between the two presidents during their one-on-one session. The White House has revealed relatively little on the contents of Trump’s meeting with Putin, prompting some Democrats on Capitol Hill to call for a subpoena of the president’s translator, the only other American in the room for the one-on-one talks.

The bulk of the outcry over the Trump-Putin summit stemmed from the duo’s press conference, where the U.S. president seemed to accept his Russian counterpart’s denial that the Kremlin had anything to do with a campaign of cyberattacks intended to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, something for which the U.S. intelligence community has blamed Russia. Trump later sought to walk back that statement.

Despite the controversy surrounding his bilateral meeting with Putin, Trump has claimed the summit was a success and has insisted that it is only to America’s benefit that he and the Russian president get along. He has complained loudly, even as he spent much of last week working to placate the uproar created by the meeting, that the media has offered only negative coverage of his talks with Putin.
