Trump warns Maxine Waters: 'Be careful what you wish for'

By LOUIS NELSON

President Donald Trump warned Rep. Maxine Waters on Monday to “be careful what you wish for” and attacked her intelligence after the California Democrat urged opponents of the president to confront members of his Cabinet.

“Congresswoman Maxine Waters, an extraordinarily low IQ person, has become, together with Nancy Pelosi, the Face of the Democrat Party,” the president wrote on Twitter. “She has just called for harm to supporters, of which there are many, of the Make America Great Again movement. Be careful what you wish for Max!”

Waters, in remarks over the weekend, attacked the Trump administration policy of separating children from parents who bring them across the border illegally. She suggested that opponents of the practice make their feelings known to members of Trump’s Cabinet — not all Trump supporters, as the president suggested — wherever they may be.

“Let's make sure we show up wherever we have to show up. And if you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd,” Waters said over the weekend in Los Angeles, according to a CNN report. “And you push back on them. And you tell them they're not welcome anymore, anywhere.”

"The people are going to turn on them. They're going to protest,” she said of Trump administration members in a subsequent appearance on MSNBC. “They're going to absolutely harass them until they decide that they're going to tell the President, 'No, I can't hang with you.'"

Waters’ remarks prompted criticism from allies of the president, who suggested that liberal opposition to Trump — whose rallies have been at times checkered with calls for violence and other inflammatory language — had devolved from civil political discourse to shouting and personal attacks.

Waters’ comments also earned a gentle rebuke from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who called for a more unifying message with the 2018 midterms approaching.

“In the crucial months ahead, we must strive to make America beautiful again. Trump’s daily lack of civility has provoked responses that are predictable but unacceptable,” the minority leader wrote on Twitter, sharing a link to an article about Waters’ remarks. “As we go forward, we must conduct elections in a way that achieves unity from sea to shining sea.”
