Fallon on Trump: 'I don't know what he's talking about'
By LOUIS NELSON
Late-night host Jimmy Fallon said Monday night that he has never called President Donald Trump on the phone, rebuking the president’s claim that Fallon called him to say thank you after Trump’s September 2016 appearance on “The Tonight Show.”
“First of all, I’ve never called this human in my life. I don’t have his number, I don’t want his number,” Fallon said. “And monster ratings? ... I’ve never said ‘monster ratings.’ I don’t know what he’s talking about.”
Monday’s “Tonight Show” was Fallon’s first opportunity to respond at length to Trump, who wrote on Twitter on Sunday night that the late-night host was “whimpering” about the 2016 appearance where he tousled the then-candidate’s hair. Fallon was the target of significant criticism for the interview, which was perceived as being overly friendly toward the controversial candidate, and Fallon has said that “looking back, I would do it differently."
Trump also wrote online Sunday that Fallon “called & said ‘monster ratings,’” a point the comedian specifically denied on his Monday night show. Fallon noted that “The Tonight Show” dipped significantly in the ratings after the Trump appearance.
“By the way, Donald. I don’t know if you’ve seen my ratings the past two years — you didn’t help my ratings,” the host said. “But really, thanks a lot. Thanks for nothing.”
Fallon began his monologue Monday night by offering “a shout-out to our show’s No. 1 fan: the president of the United States!” He also jokingly addressed first lady Melania Trump: “So Melania, if you’re watching, I don’t think your anti-bullying campaign is working.”
