Trump: DOJ response to document requests 'an embarrassment to our country!'

President Donald Trump derided the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation on Monday for "slow walking" requests for documents by congressional Republicans, calling it "an embarrassment to our country!"

"So sad that the Department of “Justice” and the FBI are slow walking, or even not giving, the unredacted documents requested by Congress," Trump wrote on Twitter. "An embarrassment to our country!"

House Republicans recently subpoenaed the Justice Department for its records relating to the probe of Hillary Clinton's private email server, with Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) citing "ongoing delays" in the process as an impetus behind the action. The move comes amid intensifying criticisms among Republican leaders of the Justice Department and FBI's handling of the Clinton investigation.

Democrats have pushed back against the charges, framing them as politically motivated and unsubstantiated.

In response to the legal maneuvering, FBI director Christopher Wray last week announced that the bureau would double the number of staffers reviewing documents from 27 to 54 to comply with requests from GOP officials.

"Up until today, we have dedicated 27 FBI staff to review the records," FBI director Christopher Wray said in a statement last Tuesday. "The actual number of documents responsive to this request is likely in the thousands. Regardless, I agree that the current pace of production is too slow."

The president has publicly questioned top Justice Department officials for their handling of probes into the Clinton email server as well as the ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and potential ties to Trump campaign officials.
