Comey calls GOP-led House Russia investigation ‘a wreck’

Former FBI Director James Comey on Sunday panned the Republican House Intelligence Committee’s Russia report as a “political document,” charging its investigation “wrecked the committee.”

Asked on NBC's "Meet the Press" by host Chuck Todd to pass judgment on the committee’s investigation, Comey said, “It wrecked the committee, and it damaged relationships with the FISA Court, the intelligence communities."

"It's just a wreck,” Comey said.

The committee’s Republican members endorsed a 253-page report Friday concluding its investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, signaling the committee found no evidence of collusion between Donald Trump's campaign and Russia but affirming evidence that Russia interfered in the 2016 election.

President Trump took to Twitter on Friday after the report‘s release, saying it vindicated his claim that the investigations into his campaign were a “total Witch Hunt.”

Comey, whose interview Sunday is part of a tour for his book, “A Higher Loyalty,” renewed questions of the president’s credibility and accused him of “an effort to try to undermine the credibility of the investigation that the special counsel's conducting.”

On the president’s involvement with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, Comey said, “I hope that he will allow Director Mueller to complete his work. Whether that includes an interview or not is up to him.”
