Trump attacks Comey after the former FBI director denies improperly leaking memos

'James Comey can’t define what a leak is,' the president tweets.

President Donald Trump lashed out at James Comey on Friday morning following an appearance by the former FBI director on a Fox News program, where he denied leaking memos inappropriately.

"Is everybody believing what is going on. James Comey can’t define what a leak is. He illegally leaked CLASSIFIED INFORMATION but doesn’t understand what he did or how serious it is," the president tweeted. "He lied all over the place to cover it up. He’s either very sick or very dumb. Remember sailor!"

In an interview Thursday with Fox News’ Bret Baier Thursday night, Comey denied he leaked classified information improperly when he shared memos documenting his meetings with President Donald Trump with a friend, Columbia University law professor Daniel Richman, and his legal team. “I didn't consider it part of an FBI file, Comey said.” “I always thought of it as mine, like a diary.”

“Remember sailor!” possibly refers to Kristian Saucier, a Navy sailor who pleaded guilty and was sentenced in 2016 for taking and retaining unauthorized photos of classified areas and objects aboard a submarine. Trump pardoned Saucier in March.

Earlier Thursday, Trump gave a wide-ranging interview on Fox & Friends where he maintained his stance that Comey “leaked classified information to get a special counsel.”

“He wrote a lot of phony stuff,” Trump said.

The president has repeatedly attempted to discredit special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible collusion between Trump, people in his inner circle, and operatives in Russia during the 2016 campaign.

Trump has maintained since firing him in May 2017 that Comey can’t be trusted. The relationship between the two has intensified in recent weeks following the release of Comey’s memoir, A Higher Loyalty, which included personal attacks on the president’s physical appearance. Comey has since indicated he wished he didn’t include those portions.
