Trump sounds off on illegal immigration and migrant 'caravans'

By LOUIS NELSON

President Donald Trump warned Monday that “our country is being stolen” by undocumented immigrants, pushing the Senate to abandon the legislative filibuster in order to pass stricter immigration laws.

Trump also called on Mexico to use its immigration laws, which he praised as tougher than those in the U.S., to stop a caravan of Central American immigrants who have thus far made their way largely unfettered through Mexico and towards the U.S. border.

“Mexico has the absolute power not to let these large “Caravans” of people enter their country. They must stop them at their Northern Border, which they can do because their border laws work, not allow them to pass through into our country, which has no effective border laws,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “Congress must immediately pass Border Legislation, use Nuclear Option if necessary, to stop the massive inflow of Drugs and People. Border Patrol Agents (and ICE) are GREAT, but the weak Dem laws don’t allow them to do their job. Act now Congress, our country is being stolen!”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has maintained that he doesn't want to change the Senate rules.

BuzzFeed reported over the weekend that a caravan of migrants numbering more than 1,000 is making its way towards the U.S. border, crossing immigration checkpoints. The group is organized by Pueblos Sin Fronteras – People Without Borders – which has helped the migrants avoid Mexican authorities as well as cartels who might do them harm.

The Monday morning Twitter posts were a continuation of arguments the president pushed online Sunday as well, when he complained that the immigration situation was growing increasingly dire, a predicament for which he blamed “ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like catch & release.” Trump also blamed Mexico for “very little, if not NOTHING” to stem the flow of immigrants making their way north, threatening to “stop their cash cow, NAFTA,” if the Mexican government doesn’t do more.

And after declaring Sunday that there would be “no more DACA deal” to be had with Democrats, the president reiterated Monday that he was no longer interested in cutting a deal to protect undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. Instead, he urged Republicans to bypass Democrats.

“DACA is dead because the Democrats didn’t care or act, and now everyone wants to get onto the DACA bandwagon... No longer works,” Trump wrote. “Must build Wall and secure our borders with proper Border legislation. Democrats want No Borders, hence drugs and crime!”
