Today in Politics: Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Donald Trump

New York Times

Good Tuesday morning from Washington, where a confidant of Hillary Rodham Clinton is set to testify to a House committee about the attacks in Benghazi, Libya. As for the presidential candidates, the crowded Republican field finally found room for Jeb Bush, and now, it might have to again move over for a hopeful who needs only one name: Trump.

Donald Trump day is upon us.

The real estate mogul and reality television star, whose numerous feints at running for office haven’t resulted in an actual candidacy, is expected to formally declare his campaign for president on Tuesday.

At a news conference in the atrium at — where else? — Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan, Mr. Trump will most likely lay out his plan to finally be a part of a Republican race.

Given his standing in the polls, Mr. Trump will also most likely be a presence in the Republican debates, which are to be limited to 10 participants. That raises some potentially difficult prospects for the other candidates.

But the man who is known for his gold-plated logo, his pouf of hair and the catchphrase “You’re fired!” has long coveted credibility in politics.

He has yet to say publicly whether he would pledge to remain in the race through the Iowa caucuses early next year, or whether he would be open to renewing his television show, “The Apprentice,” down the road.

But on Tuesday, he is guaranteed to be the center of Republican attention.
