Looking south |
Since I was up in the city of an event, I did something I haven't done in a long time, play tourist and walk across the Golden Gate. The locals just call it "The GG", so if you go just say 'I'm heading over the GG', you will sound more local. In any case, I parked at the north view point and did the mile walk across, stopping to admire the views. One thing though is that the walkway is narrow and with a lot of walkers and bicyclists it can get crowded. On the weekends the make the bikes ride on the west side but during the week everyone is on the east side of the bridge.

The walk is nice but the wind can be strong and fog can block your view, it can also make it feel very cold. Wear a jacket at least, if it is warm you can take it off, but if you don't have one, the walk can be cold. A lot of people come to San Francisco in the summer thinking it will be warm and sunny. Sunny yes, warm is a maybe. Fog is normal as is strong wind, the mix can make for some cold shivering moments. The climate is such that you can be in a wind protected area and it is sunny and warm, you walk a few blocks and it becomes very windy, foggy and cold. Always bring a light jacket to have if needed. It is classic to see tourist in shorts and a sweatshirt they had to buy because they were freezing in July.
