I came across some pictures of the 'Northern Lights' (of course there are Southern Lights too) and I thought I would post them. I saw these lights once, since I do not live far enough North to be able to see them as they occur. Maybe sometime int he future I will travel North and be able to witness this phenomena again. The one time I saw them I was in Alaska and just had the chance to see a little of the light. It was spring so it was light most of the time so not a lot of time to see it and get a good view.
If you don't know what causes this event, it is charged particle coming from the sun, hitting the earths magnetic field and being deflected to the poles. The charged particles interact with the magnetic field and create the light in the upper atmosphere.
