The Seattle Times reports that the two companies have contributed the most so far to Initiative-522 campaigns. The biotech giant wants to defeat the initiative which would require labeling of some genetically modified foods. The soap company is supporting it.
They also threw their weight behind the same issue last year in California. The Monsanto side, which collected the most money, won.
So far in Washington state, Monsanto and other grocery and biotech firms have raised $11.1 million. That compares with $3.6 million from Dr. Bronner’s and others, the Times reports.
Residents of Washington state will vote on I-522 in November.
