Iranian official calls Trump’s comments on MOU “disgusting”
By Frederik Pleitgen
An Iranian official said Wednesday that US President Donald Trump’s remarks on the two countries’ memorandum of understanding (MOU) were “disgusting,” as diplomacy between Tehran and Washington unraveled following the latest regional flare-up.
Earlier on Wednesday, the US president warned that the MOU — which was supposed to lay out a pathway to long-term peace for the US and Iran — “is over.” Trump condemned Iranian officials as “evil, sick people” in remarks at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, adding: “It’s a waste of time dealing with them.”
Later in the day, an Iranian official told CNN he believes that Trump’s words “were disgusting.”
The US military launched a wave of strikes on Iran early Wednesday, triggering retaliatory Iranian attacks on US-allied nations in the Persian Gulf. The US strikes were in response to a series of Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz this week, which sparked condemnation from several Arab nations.
