Trump threatens retaliatory strikes on key Iranian infrastructure as conflict escalates

The president proclaimed that any type of Iranian attack on vessels traveling through the waterway would trigger a corresponding American strike on key infrastructure.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned that the United States would strike Iranian bridges and power plants if Iran continues to attack commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump proclaimed that any type of Iranian attack on vessels traveling through the waterway would trigger corresponding American strikes on key infrastructure, including locations in or around Tehran.

“From this point forward, any time the Islamic Republic of Iran shoots at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, whether it be by Missile, Rocket, Drone, or any other device or weapon, the United States will bomb and destroy ONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT, including those located next to, or in, the Capital City of Tehran,” the president wrote.

Bombing civilian infrastructure like power plants is generally recognized internationally as a war crime, but it is not the first time the president has threatened to carry out strikes on such critical sites.

Trump has previously used such rhetoric to push Iran to reopen the strait. The Geneva Conventions prohibit strikes on infrastructure acknowledged to be “indispensable to the survival of the civilian population.”

After the Washington-brokered ceasefire fell apart in June, the U.S. escalated its military campaign, launching continuous strikes on Iranian targets for 11 days straight. Iran has targeted American military bases in Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan.

Four U.S. service members were killed over the weekend, bringing the total number of American troop casualties to an estimated 18 deaths.

The announcement comes amid Trump’s claims that the midterm elections will not affect his war plan with Iran. A new POLITICO Poll shows Trump is losing support from his base on the war.
