Trump slams Biden, praises ‘tough cookie’ Hegseth and talks upcoming army parade in Memorial Day address

“Their valor gave us the freest, greatest and most noble republic ever to exist,” Trump said of fallen service members.

President Donald Trump rang in Memorial Day with an address at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, departing from his somber message to slam the Biden administration, reaffirm his support for embattled Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and look ahead to the coming 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympics.

Trump began his speech by praising members of his administration, including Vice President JD Vance and Hegseth, whom he called “a tough cookie” who “went through a lot.” He then honored fallen service members and their gold star families, paying tribute to their sacrifice and invoking famous battles that shaped the country’s history.

“Their valor gave us the freest, greatest and most noble republic ever to exist on the face of the Earth,” Trump said of fallen service members — then quickly waded into the political arena from there. “A republic that I am fixing after a long and hard four years, that was a hard four years we went through,” he said to cheers.

While not mentioning former President Joe Biden by name, Trump lamented the former administration and said the country was “now doing so very well” under his leadership. “Who would let that happen, people pouring through our borders unchecked, people doing things that are indescribable and not for today to discuss.”

Later, after reciting the stories of three fallen “great, great warriors,” Trump again changed his tune, promoting an upcoming military parade in Washington to mark the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary. The event falls on Trump’s 79th birthday in June.

“In some ways Im glad I missed that second term where it was, because I wouldnt be your president for that most important of all,” Trump said. “In addition we have the World Cup and we have the Olympics, can you imagine? I missed that four years and now, look what I have, I have everything. Its amazing the way things work out. God did that, I believe that too.”

The president also marked Memorial Day with an early morning post on Truth Social, his social media platform. In all caps, he shouted out “the scum that spent the last four years trying to destroy our country” and “USA hating judges who suffer from an ideology that is sick.”
