Margaret Hunter sentenced to home confinement in Duncan Hunter case

Former Rep. Duncan Hunter’s wife, Margaret Hunter, was sentenced to eight months of home detention on Monday after assisting federal prosecutors in a corruption case against her husband.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Whelan lauded Margaret Hunter’s “remarkable cooperation” in sparing her jail time despite what prosecutors call her involvement in the couple siphoning off hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign finance funds for personal use.

Duncan Hunter pleaded guilty in December to violating campaign finance law and was sentenced earlier this year to 11 months in prison, although efforts to reduce prison crowding during the coronavirus pandemic has delayed the start of his prison term. U.S. Attorney David Leshner said Margaret Hunter, who served as her husband's campaign manager, played an “important part” in obtaining her husband’s plea.

The departure of Duncan Hunter, a Republican, has thrown open his former San Diego-area House seat. Republican and former California Rep. Darrell Issa is trying to return to the House after having resigned his former seat — since claimed by Democratic Rep. Mike Levin — and Issa will square off in November against Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar, who came within a few points of unseating Hunter in 2018.

Campa-Najjar’s impressive showing in 2018 energized Democratic donors, but the district’s 10-point Republican registration advantage — and the absence of a federal corruption investigation — likely gives Issa an edge this time around. Issa has embraced President Donald Trump, reflecting the fact that California's 50th Congressional District remains a red bastion in a largely blue state.
