Poll: No convention bounce for Biden, who maintains big lead over Trump

A new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll showed virtually no change in Joe Biden’s image ratings.

Joe Biden hasn’t gotten much of a polling bounce between his Democratic convention speech last Thursday and the start of the Republican convention on Monday.

A new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll showed virtually no change in Biden’s image ratings, which remain split evenly between voters who view him positively and negatively. And other horse-race polling shows Biden with a large lead over President Donald Trump — but still roughly where his advantage stood going into the conventions.

The extremely limited amount of polling conducted since the Democrats’ convention wrapped last Thursday offers an incomplete picture, at best, of any changes in public opinion after the party’s four-night presentation. But with the GOP convention already underway, it is likely to be the only way to discern any distinct convention bump for Biden.

In the new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll, conducted from Friday to Sunday, 48 percent of voters have a favorable opinion of Biden, compared with 46 percent who view the former vice president unfavorably. That is a slight improvement from a preconvention POLITICO/Morning Consult poll, which showed Biden’s favorable rating at 46 percent.

That is significantly better than Trump’s image ratings: 42 percent favorable and 56 percent unfavorable.

Similarly, a separate Morning Consult “Political Intelligence” tracking poll of Biden’s favorability rating and an Axios/SurveyMonkey poll also showed small upticks in Biden’s favorability rating.

Significant portions of the virtual convention programming last week seemed geared toward reintroducing Biden — who has had a lengthy political career on the national stage, including eight years as Barack Obama’s vice president — to voters. Segments focused on Biden’s family, the profound personal tragedies he has suffered — even his friendships with Amtrak employees dating back to his time commuting between Wilmington, Del., and Washington.

In the horse race, the latest Morning Consult tracking poll shows Biden 10 points ahead of Trump, 52 percent to 42 percent. That is statistically unchanged from an 8-point lead on the eve of the Democratic convention, 51 percent to 43 percent.

“Morning Consult’s daily tracking of the 2020 election showed no post-DNC bump for former Vice President Joe Biden, though he still holds a commanding national lead over President Donald Trump,” said Kyle Dropp, co-founder and chief research officer at Morning Consult.

A CBS News/YouGov panel-back survey, in which respondents were surveyed before the convention and then reinterviewed afterward, also gave Biden a 10-point lead — unchanged from before the convention.

The new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll surveyed 1,992 registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
