Kanye West's presidential nominating petitions challenged in New Jersey

A Democratic lawyer is challenging Kanye West’s presidential petition signatures, threatening his place as an independent candidate on New Jersey’s ballot.

Scott Salmon, who ran for Congress in 2018, said that although West filed at least 500 signatures more than needed to get on the ballot, those signatures are “egregiously bad, almost to a degree insulting.” The signatures, he said, are missing required information and many appear to be written in the same hand.

The acclaimed entertainer and billionaire, who listed his residence as Cody, Wyo., filed 1,327 petition signatures with the state on July 27 — far more than the 800 required to get on the ballot. He was one of seven independent or third-party candidates who filed.

West has made a series of political pronouncements that have made him hard to pin down through a traditional ideological spectrum and have captivated some Libertarians, but raised concerns among others about his mental health. He has acknowledged having bipolar disorder, and after a bizarre rally in South Carolina, his wife, Kim Kardashian West, issued a lengthy statement calling for “compassion and empathy.”
