Trump: Anonymous Times op-ed 'very unfair to our country'

The New York Times op-ed penned by an anonymous senior Trump administration official is "very unfair to our country," President Donald Trump said Thursday night, continuing to vent his frustration over the latest bombshell to upend his administration.

The official, who went unnamed by the Times, detailed a "resistance" movement inside the Trump administration aimed at safeguarding the nation from what the author claimed are the president's impulsive, impetuous and petty tendencies. Trump has suggested that the author's actions amount to treason.

“It's a very unfair thing,” he told Fox News’ Pete Hegseth in an interview conducted before the crowd at his Thursday night rally in Montana. “It's very unfair to our country and to the millions of people that voted really for us. They voted for us.”

The president also suggested that the Times may have overstated the role of op-ed's author, who is described only as “a senior official in the Trump administration,” pointing to the deluge of denials from top officials from Vice President Mike Pence on down on Thursday.

Trump downplayed the anonymous author’s role in the administration, claiming that “we have thousands of people that in theory could qualify” and suggesting the author could be a career government employee.

“It may not be a Republican,” he said. “It may not be a conservative. It may be a deep state person that's been there a long time.”
