Trump foresees 'fair trade' deal with China after halting tariffs
By LOUIS NELSON
President Donald Trump predicted Monday morning that his administration will be able to strike a “fair trade” deal with China, chiding Sen. Chuck Schumer for what he said were the failings of Democrats to address the issue under President Barack Obama.
“I ask Senator Chuck Schumer, why didn’t President Obama & the Democrats do something about Trade with China, including Theft of Intellectual Property etc.?” the president wrote on Twitter. “They did NOTHING! With that being said, Chuck & I have long agreed on this issue! Fair Trade, plus, with China will happen!”
Trump also announced that China had agreed to purchase “massive amounts of ADDITIONAL Farm/Agricultural Products,” a development he said “would be one of the best things to happen to our farmers in many years!”
A spokesman for Schumer (D-N.Y.) did not immediately return a request for comment.
Trump administration negotiators, led by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, have been in negotiations with the Chinese government in recent weeks, part of the president’s pledge to reset the trade relationship between the two nations on terms more favorable for the U.S. Mnuchin announced Sunday that the Trump administration would hold off on imposing billions in planned tariffs on Chinese imports amid the ongoing negotiations.
"We're putting the trade war on hold," Mnuchin told Fox News Sunday over the weekend.
While China has drawn the majority of the president’s trade related ire in recent months, resetting America’s economic relationships around the globe has been a priority for Trump dating back to his 2016 campaign. In addition to demanding a shift in trade ties with China, Trump has also demanded a renegotiation of NAFTA, threatening to withdraw if the deal is not adjusted to his liking, and targeted the European Union and South Korea with trade complaints as well.
