Pelosi: Trump is ‘a gift that keeps on giving’ to Democrats

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Monday called Donald Trump “a gift that keeps on giving” to Democrats.

Skyrocketing voter registration among Hispanics, especially in California — “we expect to win some seats there” — as well as an “electrified” black voter community are just two major responses to Trump’s anti-Mexico and anti-Obama sentiments, Pelosi said, as she appeared at a Bloomberg Politics breakfast in Philadelphia.

She said general Republican anti-worker attitudes have been successful at “containing any damage that could be done there by [Trump's] populist appeal."

“It’s going to diminish the Republican turnout, and it’s going to increase the Democratic turnout,” Pelosi said. And while Trump has pushed some voters toward the left, “some of these people who were attracted to Trump were never going to vote Democratic anyway,” she added.

Commenting on the Democratic National Committee, Pelosi said that she knew that its emails had been hacked by Russians but not whether those same hackers had leaked them. She also said it was more important to focus on Hillary Clinton's historic achievement of becoming the Democratic Party nominee, rather than dwell on the controversy surrounding outgoing DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, according to Bloomberg News.

However, she disagreed with the assessment by Clinton vice-presidential pick Tim Kaine that Democrats would not be able to take back the House this fall. "I’m always an optimist as many of you know,” she said, according to Bloomberg.
