Roasts Trump...

Franken roasts Trump at DNC

By Sarah Wheaton

Al Franken briefly turned the Democratic National Convention into the roast of Donald Trump on Monday night.

Though he’s a former Saturday Night Live star and comedy writer, the Minnesota senator tends to avoid humor on the job. But on Monday, he couldn’t resist delivering a standup routine in Philadelphia.

Franken introduced himself as a “world renowned expert on right wing megalomaniacs: Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, and now, Donald Trump.”

(Two of Franken’s books skewered the conservative hosts: “Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot” and “Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them.”)

His credential for critiquing the Republican nominee was his “doctorate from megalomania studies from Trump University,” Franken said.

“Did you know that Trump University’s School of Ripping People Off is ranked second in the nation right behind Bernie Madoff University,” Franken added.

He mocked Trump’s contention that his business successes make him qualified to be president: “If you believe that, I’ve got some delicious Trump Steaks to sell you,” Franken said, before taking a more serious tone.

“I think rather than voting for someone who’s never done anything for anyone other than himself,” Franken said, people should back Hillary Clinton, who has spent “her entire life working to get important things done with the American people.”

Franken urged Democrats to take an active role in the campaign, noting that he won his own election by 312 votes. He thanked his supporters and urged Democrats to spend the next months working feverishly for their candidate.

Then, in a rare move for a national politicians, Franken (jokingly) threw responsibility and family values out the window: “Many of you have jobs. Many of you have families. Ignore them,” he said. “Kids love it when their parents aren’t home.”

Not to worry, he added: “An 8-year-old kid knows how to use a microwave oven…An 8-year-old kid can teach a 4-year-old to use a microwave oven.”
