Scratching their heads.......

Auto Incorrect

By Bill Maher

It’s frustrating when Republicans are willing to shut down the government over Obamacare or when they threaten to defund the Department of Homeland Security over their immigration demands or when they hold up an Attorney General confirmation over their abortion agenda. It doesn’t seem like what’s best for America as a whole, but at least you can understand that they’re doing the bidding of their base.

Sometimes though, they’re just so shamelessly serving their own personal political aspirations that it leaves even their most loyal constituents scratching their heads. Take the case of Republican State Senator Bo Watson of Tennessee. His state Senate Commerce Committee was considering a $165.8 million tax incentive to entice Volkswagen to do business in the state, which was a no-brainer because the incentive would bring 200,000-plus new, good-paying jobs to Tennessee residents. But Bo Watson had a bigger concern: What if some or most of those jobs were union jobs? Union people don’t typically vote Republican.

According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, Watson said at the hearing, “The incentive, no doubt, will create about 200,000 jobs directly, and countless more indirectly. It will give southeast Tennessee a big foothold in the automotive industry, particularly in research and development. And it will allow the development of a new line of Volkswagen vehicles, particularly the SUV.” But, he added, “VW is a magnet for organized labor, intentionally…  I believe this committee should know and understand what Volkswagen’s position is on this issue, both here and in Germany.”

Hey, Bo-Bo, it’s labor unions – which built this country and its middle class, by the way – not ISIS.

Bo Watson continued, “There is no doubt… our city, our county, the surrounding counties have been incredibly impacted, mostly for the positive, but that transformation can also involve other aspects of our communities and our culture.”

Your culture? Again, good union jobs, not Sharia Law. That’s what Bo’s afraid of – that an influx of living-wage union jobs will change the culture:  “We're not a liberal, working Union state. We're angry, dirt-poor, unemployed Republicans!”
