GOP lawmaker angrily accuses Democrats of fueling violence as tensions erupt on House floor

Just after the House chamber paused for a moment of silence for conservative activist Charlie Kirk, a shouting match briefly erupted on the floor as one GOP lawmaker accused Democrats of fueling political violence.

Rep. Lauren Boebert – who is a vocal supporter of public prayer – complained that “silent prayers get silent results,” with Democrats audibly groaning, according to a person who witnessed the exchange. Then Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, who was close to Kirk personally, began hurling expletives at Democrats, that person said.

“You f**king caused this,” Luna shouted across the House chamber, according to another person who overheard her remarks. CNN has reached out to Boebert and Luna for comment.

In response, Democrats could be heard shouting back about a school shooting in Colorado Wednesday and a call for action on gun violence.

It was a tense moment in the House, where lawmakers were processing news of the Kirk’s death. President Donald Trump announced Kirk’s passing at around the same time. Shortly after, Speaker Mike Johnson could be seen talking to Boebert. The Colorado Republican appeared upset after the conversation and was later seen walking up to Johnson afterward to whisper in his ear.

Both Boebert and Luna were close to Kirk. Luna was visibly emotional as she entered the Capitol on Wednesday afternoon, telling reporters about how Kirk personally encouraged her to get into politics.

As she walked into the Capitol, Luna also lashed out at Democrats and accused them of “getting people killed” as she spoke to reporters.

“Stop with the rhetoric. You’re getting people killed. You’re gonna get one of us killed too while you continue doing it,” Luna said, when asked about her message to Democrats, before Kirk had been pronounced dead.
