3 girls ages 11 to 14 arrested in connection to series of assaults in SF

Three girls, ages 11 to 14, were arrested over the weekend in connection with a recent series of assaults around San Francisco, police said Monday.

The girls are suspected in at least five alleged attacks this month, the most recent on Saturday, when two people were injured in an assault in the 100 block of Fourth Street.

Bystanders intervened to stop the attack and the suspects ran away, police said in a news release. The victims were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Using surveillance video of the attack, police sent out images of the suspects to officers on patrol.

Plainclothes officers spotted girls matching the suspects' images at Stonestown Galleria and detained three girls.

They cited and released two of the suspects, ages 13 and 14, on suspicion of assault likely to produce great bodily injury. Another girl, age 11, was detained, admonished and released to her parents at the scene.

"Violent attacks like these will never be tolerated, and the SFPD will use all resources available to ensure our city is safe," Interim Police Chief Paul Yep said. "I am extremely disappointed in the actions of these individuals, and they will be held accountable."
