Republican on Senate Intelligence Committee demands more investigation into Signal chat

Republican Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, demanded further investigation into the Signal chat among top administration officials on war plans, but he refused to say if he believes they discussed classified information on the message chain.
“I just think there’s going to be, have to be more investigation into the facts and circumstances,” he said.
The messages came to light in a report by The Atlantic, after one of its journalists was accidentally added to the group. The Senate Intelligence Committee held a hearing about what happened this morning. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe — two individuals reportedly in the Signal group chat — were among those who testified.
“I think it may be a surprise to some people that the intelligence community uses commercial encrypted app to communicate outside of classified systems. And then there’s the issue of government records. Typically, there’s a preservation requirement and some other requirements, and including freedom of information foundation inquiries into public records. So I think we’re just going to have to get to the bottom of this,” Cornyn said.
The committee vice chair, Democrat Sen. Mark Warner, meanwhile, slammed the intelligence officials who testified for not acknowledging the seriousness of the incident and said that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth should resign.
“We didn’t even get an apology. We didn’t even get an acknowledgement. Oh yes, if the Houthis had gotten this information, they could have repositioned their defenses and American lives could have been and probably would have been lost,” he said.
