GOP senator on Signal scandal: "This has got to be the last time something this big and dumb happens"
From CNN's Ted Barrett
Republican Sen. Kevin Cramer expressed frustration over the Signal chat incident among top Trump administration officials, telling CNN, “this has got to be the last time something this big and dumb happens,” and someone needs to “apologize and say it’ll never happen again.”
“It’s such a major first strike, in my mind. I don’t know how many strikes you get. This one’s a really big first one. Maybe it’s worth two,” Cramer said, explaining that Republicans want to hold themselves to a higher standard than the Biden administration that saw Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin fail to notify key government leaders of a hospitalization in 2024.
“I don’t know if a head will roll or has to roll yet, but this has got to be the last time something this big and dumb happens,” he said.
Cramer credited President Donald Trump for saying they had learned a lesson from the incident, but also said an apology is needed: “I would hope somebody owns up to the fact there’s a major mistake and apologize and says, ‘it’ll never happen again.’ I would hope somebody would say that. That’s what adults do, responsible adults do.”
