Kimberly Guilfoyle's revealing take on the Trump indictment

Column: SFGATE politics reporter Alec Regimbal on Kimberly Guilfoyle's reaction to the indictment of Donald Trump

Alec Regimbal

In the days following the indictment of former President Donald Trump, Kimberly Guilfoyle — the ex-wife of California Gov. Gavin Newsom, now engaged to Donald Trump Jr. — has not been subtle in vigorously repeating the same message: The liberal elites are really coming after you; Donald Trump is just in their way.

Guilfoyle has been shouting this message from the proverbial rooftops. Shortly after news of Trump's indictment broke on Thursday last week, she appeared in an interview on Newsmax and said, "They're after Donald Trump because they're really after you." She issued a pair of back-to-back tweets later that night that basically said the same thing, and then repeated the message again Friday morning when she was interviewed on a New York talk radio show.

I don't want to spend a lot of time interrogating her nakedly bad-faith logic, but will say two quick things: 1) If I were hoarding a trove of top-secret documents in my apartment and refused to turn them over when asked, federal agents would likely kick down my door, put a black bag over my head and carry me off to some classified detention center. 2) Many other prominent conservatives figures who hate the liberal elites, including Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, are not under investigation for allegedly committing various crimes. Trump is unique in consistently doing things that land him in potential legal jeopardy.

The reason for Guilfoyle's repeated "they're coming after you" refrain is clear: The whole thing is just another Trump grift with Guilfoyle — who served as national finance chair for Trump's 2020 campaign — dutifully repeating the canned line that will raise the most money.

Trumpworld routinely profits off of the former president's political and legal troubles. Fundraising emails from the Trump campaign were sent out shortly after news of the indictment broke, and let's not forget that Trump and his allies famously raised $250 million from supporters after the 2020 presidential election, which Trump claimed was stolen from him. The funds were supposed to go toward legal battles meant to overturn the election results in court, but a congressional investigation of the Jan. 6 riots revealed that a majority of the funds went to a Trump-backed political action committee instead.

Guilfoyle has also profited off of convincing Trump supporters that his problems are actually their problems. Turning Point USA, a conservative advocacy organization, paid her a whopping $60,000 for the two-and-a-half-minute speech she gave introducing her fiance at the Trump event that served as a precursor to the riot.

Given her history, and the specious reasoning behind her claims about why Trump is being indicted, it's safe to say that "they're coming after you" is just another way to squeeze money out of conservatives. After all, who hasn't been indicted on more than 30 counts of business fraud for allegedly having their lawyer pay $130,000 in hush money to a porn star? I mean, it could happen to anyone.
