Trump accuses 'grossly incompetent' Puerto Rican politicians of misusing federal hurricane aid

President Donald Trump criticized Puerto Rico's government on Tuesday over federal aid directed to the island territory, pushing an inaccurate figure for the cost of hurricane recovery effort and ripping local leaders as “grossly incompetent” and corrupt.
In a string of tweets late Monday night and Tuesday morning, Trump falsely claimed that “Puerto Rico got 91 Billion Dollars for the hurricane, more money than has ever been gotten for a hurricane before.” According to The Washington Post, that amount is likely the sum of $41 billion in approved aid and a $50 billion estimate of recovery costs over as much as the next 20 years. Even less than the appropriated $41 billion has actually been spent on the island thus far, the Post reported.
Trump continued, complaining that Puerto Rico’s leaders only “complain & ask for more money” and writing that they are “grossly incompetent, spend the money foolishly or corruptly, & only take from USA.”
Trump has previously complained about the cost of the recovery effort in Puerto Rico, which was battered by a pair of hurricanes in the fall of 2017 that left much of the island devastated and without power for months after. The government’s response was widely panned compared to disaster relief efforts in places like Florida and Houston, which were also slammed by powerful hurricanes that year.
The president has faced accusations that his administration was not prioritizing disaster relief efforts in Puerto Rico as much as in red states like Florida and Texas, claims that were compounded by reports that he planned to divert relief funding for Puerto Rico toward his proposed wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, an idea that faced fierce bipartisan pushback.
The president has also previously clashed with the Democratic mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Carmen Yulín Cruz, whom he called “crazed and incompetent” in a tweet late Monday night after Senate Democrats sunk a disaster relief package as a protest over what they said was inadequate funding for Puerto Rico.
But, Trump proclaimed Tuesday, despite local politicians' complaints, that “the best thing that ever happened to Puerto Rico is President Donald J. Trump.”
“So many wonderful people, but with such bad Island leadership and with so much money wasted,” he added. “Cannot continue to hurt our Farmers and States with these massive payments, and so little appreciation!”
