Philip Hammond: Second Brexit referendum ‘deserves to be considered’

Chancellor is the first Cabinet minister to speak in favor of another vote.

U.K. Chancellor Philip Hammond said Sunday that a second Brexit referendum "deserves to be considered," a day after more than 1 million people marched through London calling for another vote.

"I'm not sure there's a majority in parliament in support for a second referendum, but it's a perfectly coherent proposition," he said on Sky News' Ridge on Sunday show.

"It's a coherent proposition and it deserves to be considered," he added.

With his comments, Hammond became the first Cabinet minister to agree that supporters of a second referendum have a case, the Independent reported.

Prime Minister Theresa May has repeatedly said she opposes another vote because it would betray the British public’s decision in the first referendum three years ago.

More than 1 million people marched through London on Saturday calling for a second EU referendum, with organizers calling the march one of the biggest in British history.
