Arizona governor to appoint Martha McSally to Senate
By ALEX ISENSTADT
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has appointed GOP Rep. Martha McSally to the Senate seat being vacated by GOP Sen. Jon Kyl — tapping McSally as the Republican contender in a 2020 special election that will be among the most competitive Senate races in the country that year.
McSally, who lost a race for Arizona’s other Senate seat to Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema in 2018, will be competing to serve out the rest of the term won by the late Sen. John McCain, who passed away earlier this year. Kyl was originally appointed to fill McCain’s seat, but he will be stepping down at the end of the year to return to the private sector.
Ducey and McSally are expected to appear together in Arizona on Tuesday for a joint press conference.
“With her experience and long record of service, Martha is uniquely qualified to step up and fight for Arizona’s interests in the U.S. Senate,” Ducey said in a statement.
