McConnell ‘distressed’ over Mattis’ resignation

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday said he’s “distressed” Defense Secretary Jim Mattis resigned over differences with President Donald Trump.

Mattis resigned Thursday following Trump’s sudden decision to withdraw troops from Syria, a move that drew scorn from Republicans and Democrats.

“I am particularly distressed that he is resigning due to sharp differences with the president,” the Kentucky Republican said in a statement. “It is regrettable that the president must now choose a new Secretary of Defense.”

In his statement, McConnell also emphasized the United States should prioritize its relationship with allies and recognize that countries like Russia are among its foes — points made in Mattis’ resignation letter.

“We must do everything possible to advance an international order that is most conducive to our security, prosperity and values, and we are strengthened in this effort by the solidarity of our alliances,” Mattis wrote.
