Kasich to GOP: I'm your only hope
By Nick Gass
Hours after Donald Trump became the Republican Party's presumptive nominee and main rival Ted Cruz exited the race following a humbling defeat in Indiana, the only other man still in the running unleashed the Force.
John Kasich's campaign, which pulled resources from Indiana as part of a failed agreement with Cruz to prevent Trump from reaching the necessary number of delegates to become the nominee, posted a video to his Twitter account Wednesday morning on Star Wars Day, imagining what the not-so-distant future could look like in a galaxy not-so-far away.
"2017," the screen flashes, as the theme song to "Star Wars" plays and the familiar fading title scroll begins.
Billing Kasich as "OUR ONLY HOPE," the video lays out the bleak situation for Republicans if Trump is the nominee.
“Upon defeating Donald Trump in the largest landslide since Reagan in 1984, President Hillary Clinton is preparing to name her newest Supreme Court Justice, Elizabeth Warren," the titles begin. "Speaker Nancy Pelosi is planning new tax hikes, hoping that Senate President Chuck Schumer and his new Democratic majority can swiftly get it to the president’s desk for her signature."
The video suggests that Clinton would sign "new executive orders restricting the 2nd amendment" as well as approve of increased federal spending of Obamacare.
"Meanwhile, our allies across the world are swiftly losing faith in America’s role as a global leader, empowering our enemies and leaving America in a more dangerous position," the video continues. "But we have hope it can be different…"
The footage then cuts to a more upbeat, non-"Star Wars" theme in which an array of news anchors report on Kasich's favorable poll numbers, especially against Clinton in hypothetical general election matchups.
“ONLY ONE CANDIDATE CAN DEFEAT HILLARY CLINTON IN THE FALL," the video concludes, before flashing the campaign logo.
Kasich is expected to talk with reporters this morning at Washington Dulles International Airport before embarking on what his campaign termed a full day of finance events in Maryland and Virginia.
