Stupid is as Stupid says.....

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh waded knee-deep recently into the frigid weather that’s been blanketing the Midwest, East and parts of Canada. Limbaugh, during his Jan. 6 show, told listeners that the “polar vortex” – as it’s been dubbed by many media outlets – is phony.

“We are having a record-breaking cold snap in many parts of the country,” he said. “And right on schedule the media have come up with a way to make it sound like it’s completely unprecedented. Because they’ve got to find a way to attach this to the global warming agenda, and they have. It’s called the ‘polar vortex.’ Well, they just created it for this week.”

PunditFact, in a story written by Katie Sanders, looked into the claim. One thing she found is that the term “polar vortex” is anything but newly-minted.

“Polar Vortex may sound new to Limbaugh, journalists and anyone who is not a weather experts,” she wrote, “but it’s not a term the media cooked up to scare you. It’s been part of the conversation in meteorology circles since at least the 1940s and ‘50s, experts told us.”

The story then dipped into topics such as whether the jet stream is sometimes more symmetrical than others and whether sea ice at the North Pole is melting (it’s not – not this second, anyway).

She concluded by noting that climate scientists told PunditFact that Limbaugh’s rant is “wildly misinformed. The polar vortex has been a part of science for decades, and it certainly does not prove that sea ice is not melting. We rate this Pants on Fire!”
