While President Donald Trump said he had to decide whether to annihilate Iran or make a deal, he offered no clarity on his goals in any peace agreement.
He speaks in generalities about preventing Tehran from ever getting a nuclear weapon. But what kind of guarantees is he looking for on the nuclear program? Is he willing to end the war without receiving assurances on Tehran’s missile and drone programs?
Or would he settle for an unlimited reopening of the Strait of Hormuz — which wouldn’t be a huge concession, given the critical waterway was open before the war started?
The president’s openness to meeting an Iranian delegation in New York could mean he’s looking for a classic big moment to spin a win. Iran’s delegation will be wary of offering him such an opening.
