A student at a Bay Area middle school is in stable condition after being shot by a 12-year-old Monday afternoon, police said.
The alleged shooting took place at around 1:30 p.m. at Madison Park Academy, a school for sixth to 12th graders in the Sobrante Park neighborhood of East Oakland, police said.
A 13-year-old student at Madison Park was wounded and taken to a nearby hospital, KTVU reported. The alleged shooter, a 12-year-old, was detained, police said. It is unclear if the child is a student at the school.
Madison Park Academy has since been evacuated, with footage from KTVU showing parents flocked around the school to pick up their children. The shooting remains under investigation, the station reports. The firearm was taken by police.
A representative from Oakland Unified School District declined to comment to SFGATE, instead deferring to Oakland Police. Oakland police did not respond to a request for comment from SFGATE.
Just hours after the shooting, Oakland police chief LeRonne Armstrong discussed in a press conference a recent spate of gun violence in the city after six people were killed in four days. He also addressed this shooting.
"I’m afraid that our community is becoming numb to this horrific behavior," Armstrong said. "... Sadly, gun violence is impacting our schools, as well."
