Not many people know...
The Golden Gat Bridge. Many people don't know why it is called that, they think it is the color of the bridge. In fact, the entrance to the San Francisco bay is called The Golden Gate, The gateway to the gold fields of California in the 1850's. Also, since you would look west out the gate in the evening, the sky could be lite up and full of color, also in the morning if you are entering the bay, the sky would be a blaze in the bright golden light of the morning. The bridge is actually called "The Golden Gate" because of these, not the color of the bridge itself today. It actually was going to be painted striped Yellow and Black so it could be scene in the dense fog, the International Orange color was chosen because the yellow would have been to extreme, but they still needed a color that would make the bridge visible in dense fog.
