President Joe Biden will nominate housing nonprofit executive Julia Gordon to be the commissioner of the Federal Housing Administration, the White House said Thursday.

Gordon is the president of the National Community Stabilization Trust, which facilitates the rehabilitation of homes in underserved markets. She was also the housing director at the Center for American Progress and managed the single-family policy team at the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

FHA insures mortgages for low- to moderate-income borrowers, providing insurance on more than 8 million single-family mortgages. Gordon would be tasked with managing its roughly $1.3 trillion portfolio.

“Julia Gordon will make an excellent FHA Commissioner,” said Lisa Rice, president and CEO of the National Fair Housing Alliance. “She is a known quantity in the financial industry. She has strong ties in the civil rights and consumer protection field. She is a staunch advocate for fair housing, fair lending and safe and sound practices."
