California lifts ban

Newsom lifts California ban on barbershops, hair salons

By JEREMY B. WHITE

Most California counties will be able to reopen barbershops and beauty salons, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday.

Numerous counties have already formally declared to California that they are ready to resume some commerce given low infection rates and expanded efforts to track new cases. Newsom said those areas — 47 of California's 58 counties — will be able to allow haircuts again.

“We’re making progress. We’re moving forward," Newsom said.

The 47 counties do not include Los Angeles or several in the San Francisco Bay Area, which have not filed requests to move further in reopening.

Those businesses will still need to implement proper social distancing and furnish enough personal protective equipment, Newsom said.

The announcement underscores California's continued progress toward restarting its economy. A day earlier, Newsom announced that in-store retail could resume statewide if county stay-at-home orders allow.

The governor also allowed counties to resume church services with limited capacity.

Newsom said he also plans to release guidelines on summer camps, child care facilities and schools on Wednesday. He added that he's working with the entertainment industry to issue guidance later this week on how production might resume.
