Trump assails Sessions for 'very weak position on Hillary Clinton crimes'

President Donald Trump renewed his attacks Tuesday morning against his attorney general, writing on Twitter that Jeff Sessions “has taken a very weak position on Hillary Clinton Crimes.”

“Ukrainian efforts to sabotage Trump campaign – ‘quietly working to boost Clinton.’ So where is the investigation A.G.,” Trump wrote online just after 6 a.m. Tuesday morning, tacking the Twitter handle for Fox News host Sean Hannity, one of the president’s most vocal supporters, onto the end of the post.

Hannity has made a habit on his nightly Fox News show of pointing out a series of scandals, many related to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, that he feels have gone uncovered while the press devotes attention to the multiple ongoing investigations into Russian interference in last year’s election.

Trump's complaints about Sessions have grown louder since a New York Times interview last week in which he expressed frustration about the attorney general's decision to recuse himself from all Justice Department investigations related to last year's presidential election. The president told the Times that he would not have nominated Sessions, a former Alabama senator who was one of Trump's earliest supporters on Capitol Hill, had he known that he would recuse himself from the Russia investigation.

“Attorney General Jeff Sessions has taken a VERY weak position on Hillary Clinton crimes (where are E-mails & DNC server) & Intel leakers!” the president wrote in a second post that followed minutes later.

In Sessions' absence, Trump complained that any continuing Clinton investigation is under the purview of acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, who took over at the bureau after the president's surprise decision to fire former FBI Director James Comey. The president suggested that McCabe might be biased in favor of Clinton because his wife, 2015 Virginia state senate candidate Jill McCabe, received political donations from Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a longtime friend of the Clintons.

"Problem is that the acting head of the FBI & the person in charge of the Hillary investigation, Andrew McCabe, got $700,000 from H for wife!" Trump wrote on Twitter, suggesting that Clinton herself had made the donations when it was McAuliffe who had done so.
